He runs naked to the edge of the water and dives into a wave. It breaks and the water licks out onto the sand, a spit of foam whitening in the starlight. I look for him, my heart beating. Then he rises up, gleaming. “Come on! Come here!”

I go nearer, laughing, standing at the edge of the water. “It’s so cold. I’m scared. No way. Jack…”

But he is already coming toward me. I taste salt water as it drips off his hair. It’s like the night has turned to liquid and is beading off him onto my face and lips. The black wet salt crystal night. I scream as he lifts me up and carries me into the water. A wave rises above us. I remember when I was little, how my father held me like this while I kicked and screamed and the wave broke over us. Choked with water. But now the wave carries us out gently, lifting our bodies and in Jack’s arms I am light. I am foam. Mermaid.
